Challenges in Peer Support for Veterans & First Responders
Common challenges in peer support for veterans and first responders—like trust, stigma, burnout, and boundaries—and how to work through them safely.

Peer support can be powerful, but it isn’t always easy. Veterans and first responders carry heavy stories, strong opinions, and a lot of understandable mistrust. Sometimes people worry about saying the wrong thing, crossing boundaries, or taking on more than they can handle. This article looks honestly at the challenges in peer support—and how we address them at Battleground Peer Support so the space stays safe for everyone.
Challenges in Peer Support
While peer support is beneficial, it is not without challenges. Identifying and addressing these barriers is essential for effective programs.
Common Challenges in Peer Support
- Stigma and trust: Many veterans and first responders worry that opening up will make them look weak, hurt their career, or get back to their chain of command or department.
- Training and boundries: Peer supporters need clear training on listening, confidentiality, crisis response, and boundaries so they don’t try to “play therapist” or take on more than they can carry.
- Time and resources: Shift work, deployments, family responsibilities, and limited funding can make it hard to keep groups consistent and accessible for the people who need them most.
How Battleground Peer Support Addresses These Challenges
At Battleground Peer Support, we take these challenges seriously. We provide training and ongoing support for peer specialists, use clear guidelines around confidentiality and safety, and design groups and programs that work with real‑world schedules. Most importantly, we listen to feedback from veterans and first responders and adjust when something isn’t working.
By addressing these challenges, peer support programs can thrive and provide meaningful assistance.
If you’ve had a bad experience with support in the past—or you’re worried about opening up at all—you’re not alone. Many veterans and first responders feel the same way. At Battleground Peer Support, we work hard to create spaces that are honest, respectful, and safe for everyone in the room.
